Kinja'd!!!

Someday I want to own a Datsun 510 wagon. I want to paint it in the BRE racing livery and possibly restomod it with modern power and suspension and such.

What would be a good Nissan engine to drop in? I'm just daydreaming here, so anything goes. I'm thinking a small, light 4-pot that can be slightly boosted to 250 hp or so.

My idea: A 1.6 like the one in Ye Olde Deltawing. It weighed 200 lbs and they had it turbocharged to 300 hp. Could be neat.

EDIT: SR20DET seems to be the consensus. It's considerably heavier than the 1.6, but there's alot more history of dropping them into 510s. Thanks for the input, Opponauts! Now to figure out how to fabricate IRS for the wagon...

I approve this plan.

Though if it were me, I'd put in a NA RB26. But if you want a 4-cyl, SR20DET would give you plenty of power.

Basically, it looks like you want a Juke engine in it. It's a more than willing accomplice and can be decently boosted.

um... ill just get this out of the way for you, the answer is Sr20

Cheap, reliable, easy to make power with and everywhere

But it is a tad cliche..

SR20, lots of folks have done it already, tons of aftermarket support, you wont end up in project hell

Cliche engines are usually the best kind.

That seems to be the general consensus. Can't beat what works.

if you want nuts you can kick it up a notch with an inline 6 instead of an inline 4, and go for something from an older skyline, but then your costs get out of control

SR20DET is the common swap in them, probably alot of expertise on doing it to be found, anywhere fro 200 hp too 800 hp if built right. I'm sure someone has probably dropped a Honda F20 or F22 in one as well.

Yeah, and a 6 isn't out of the question. I just want to keep it light, something in the spirit of the 1.6 that was in the original BRE car, though that one made 198 hp NA.

And who knows? Maybe I'll just tune the existing engine and leave it NA. Nothing like a beautiful set of carbs.

Yeah, people have definitely done the Honda swap as well.

If you want to go with something a little different than an SR20, you could do an FJ20ET swap from a DR30 Skyline. It will be more expensive than the SR20 to make the same power though.

It fit's nicely in a 510 .

Most inspiring, indeed. Those wheels are absolutely essential.

Its strange, I did a search for Datsun 510's and most of what i found for sale were BRE restos. Now, I did not see a BRE wagon so that is kinda cool if you do get it done. I want a 510 so hard. Iwould go Matte black and try to resto mod to make it a comfy viable daily. Id really like to try to make it AWD just for shits and giggles but I have no clue how i would go about it

I vote for keeping it retro. Turbo'd I6 from a old Z.

(This was my friend's original plan for his. I approved, haha.)

AWD would be really interesting. "Swap" in an AWD Juke drivetrain and go rallying.

Thats what I was thinking. I would really like to use an RB engine for it, but I think by the time I am capable of affording and housing a project car I could just find a totaled Juke (perhaps Nismo if they ever get that right) and go for it.

I'm not ruling it out, but I want to keep the lightfootedness of the BRE.
